For Your Precious Gun

You’ll roll your eyes as you read this
But won’t put away your gun.
Would you look how their heads are hung?
Hung down low for the death of a loved one
Hung down low for the loss of a young one
All because of your precious gun.

You’ll cry, “This is an outrage!”
But won’t accuse your gun.
Would you look at what you’ve done?
Can you admit just for this instance
Can you admit to the loss of innocence
All because of your precious gun.

You’ll take a child’s life
But won’t let me take your gun.
Would you stand back and watch me run?
Run for my life
Run from your pride
All because of your precious gun.

You’ll ignore the tears by those who mourn
But shed some for your gun.
Would you listen to the songs they’ve sung?
Sung for the childhood that’s been taken
Sung for the accusers that were mistaken
All for your precious gun.

You’ll dig my grave
But won’t let me bury your gun.
Would you look at the hole you’ve dug?
Dug for my friend
Dug from your hands
All for your precious gun.

You’ll watch people die
But won’t let me look at your gun.
Would you look at the lives you’ve stung?
Stung by the accusations
Stung by the falsifications
All for your precious gun.

You’ll listen to their screams
But won’t listen to the gun.
Would you think it’s fun?
To watch them run for their lives
To watch them desperate to survive
All for your precious gun.

You’ll shout at the lawmakers
But won’t give up your gun.
Would you laugh and think you’ve won?
Won the lives of seventeen humans
Won the argument standing where their tomb is
All for your precious gun.

You’ll ignore the empty bedrooms
But won’t ignore your gun.
Would you look at the glare from the sun?
Lighting up unfinished college applications
Lighting up canceled future vacations
All for your precious gun.

You’ll laugh at the violence
But won’t blame your gun.
Would you laugh if it was your son?
He was a son to a mother
She was a daughter to a father
But no longer
All because of your precious gun.

You’ll have your own rally
But won’t forget your gun.
Would you look at the lives that never begun?
Stuck in a mother’s memory
Stuck in one age for eternity
All because of your precious gun.

You’ll stand trial one day
But not because of your gun.
Would all rise before the judge?
It’s time to face the victims
Of the crime committed in the system
All because of your precious gun.
